Protegrity Granted Patent for Encryption of Databases Based on a Combination of Software and Hardware

Company Continues to Break New Ground in Data Security with Advanced Database Protection Solution That Optimizes Performance and Scalability

STAMFORD, Conn., Nov. 30 - Protegrity Corporation, the leader in Data Security Management(TM) solutions, announced today that it has been awarded a United States patent for the company's technology for encrypting databases based on a combination of hardware and software. The patent, number US 6,963,980 B1, was granted on November 8, 2005 by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Ulf Mattsson, Protegrity's chief technology officer and recognized encryption expert, is the inventor of the technology.

Protegrity's technology, incorporated into its database security solutions, gives users the ability to determine the storage and process location of encrypted data and encryption keys. Users can choose to store and process encrypted data, encryption keys, and data tables within a database or within a hardware security module (HSM). The ability to make this choice, which is executed automatically based on assigned security classifications, increases the protection of particularly sensitive data or encryption keys and adds a capability to tune the implementation for maximum performance and scalability.

In some cases, government agencies and other organizations have long-established security policies that require the use of hardware devices. Protegrity's patented technology gives these companies a way to meet this requirement and take advantage of the operational and cost efficiencies offered by its advanced encryption software solutions.

"Protegrity has been committed to advancing data encryption technology for more than 10 years," said Ulf Mattsson. "This technology gives companies a way to use hardware security modules for storage and processing of select encrypted data and encryption keys, without the significant impacts on performance, network and security commonly associated with database security appliances. We see this technology as being especially beneficial for those organizations which have already invested in HSMs but are looking for ways to increase system performance and to take advantage of the centralized security policy management and tracking capabilities of software solutions."

Protegrity, the first to market with a scalable, enterprise-wide software-based security solution in 1996, currently owns seven patents for a range of data and application security technologies and has three patent applications pending. Protegrity is the only provider to offer an end-to-end data security solution, protecting sensitive information at the application, database, backup, and storage levels.
