Proposed Standard addresses oil/gas wastewater transfer pipe.

Press Release Summary:

ASTM WK44033, Specification for Fluid Composite Transfer Pipe and Fittings, will cover requirements and test methods for a new type of pipe used for general water transport at industrial, mining, and oil/gas field applications for well-site transmission of influent, fracking flowback, and wastewater, at up to 250 psi working pressures. Once approved, it will be used or referenced by federal and state regulatory agencies to maintain high quality, leak-free pipe installations.

ASTM Plastic Piping Systems Committee Developing Proposed Standard for Fluid Composite Transfer Pipe and Fittings

W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., —A proposed new ASTM International standard will be used to cover requirements and test methods for a new type of pipe intended for industrial or oil and gas wastewater transfer. ASTM WK44033, Specification for Fluid Composite Transfer Pipe and Fittings, is being developed by Subcommittee F17.68 on Energy Piping Systems, part of ASTM International Committee F17 on Plastic Piping Systems.

Pipe covered by ASTM WK44033 will be primarily used for general water transport at industrial, mining and oil/gas field applications for well-site transmission of influent, fracking flowback and wastewater, at up to 250 psi working pressures.

“This design permits easy and quick assembly and disassembly of the pipe so it can be used at other sites when no longer needed at the original site,” says James Goddard, a longtime F17 member. “Because these industries are heavily regulated and regulating agencies rely on ASTM standards, it is important that a standard be developed for this type of pipe.”

According to Goddard, once ASTM WK44033 has been approved, it will be used or referenced by federal and state regulatory agencies to maintain high quality, leak-free pipe installations. In addition it will become part of purchasing requirements for oil, gas and mining companies. Finally, test laboratories will follow the requirements in ASTM WK44033 to ensure the quality of the pipe type to provide certification to owners and regulatory agencies that the material meets the performance requirements for this kind of application.

All interested parties, including potential users, testing laboratories and consulting engineers, are invited to join in the development of ASTM WK44033.
