At Work with a Senior Project Engineer

The MHEDA Journal profiles a senior project engineer for a material handling systems integrator.

Dewitt, NY: The MHEDA Journal Online (http://www.TheMhedaJournal.org), is the leading online magazine for the forklift, conveyor, storage & handling, and general material handling equipment industries. The 4th Quarter issue of the magazine is online now and features a profile of Calvin Baker, senior project engineer at Hy-Tek Material Handling. Baker works collaboratively with the Hy-Tek sales team to design engineered system solutions for customers.

Baker has been working at Hy-Tek for eight years and always has a full plate. "When a customer comes to us with a problem, I work with a team that determines the best course of action," says Baker. "We look at their facility and collaborate to develop a concept, and then we order parts and coordinate installation."

Baker, who has been working with engineered systems for 30 years, has seen the tools of the trade change, but knows that the basic skill set remains the same. "To succeed, I have to be organized and approach problems in a calm and logical way to determine the optimal design," he says. "It's difficult work but seeing a customer's face the first time they see their new system work the way it was intended makes it all worth it."

To take a project from a blank piece of paper to a steel-filled facility requires a complete tool set. Baker utilizes programs like AutoCAD and the Internet to find additional information about rack loading and seismic considerations. He also uses measuring tools such as laser measures, tape measures and plum-bobs when field-measuring a facility prior to installation.

While those tools are important, organization is the most important weapon in Baker's arsenal. "I may be doing a proposal for one customer, coordinating installation for another and ordering equipment for another," says Baker. "If I am not properly organized, something will slip through the cracks. I treat each customer as though they are the only one that matters."
