Bailey Brand Consulting Takes Top Prize in Project 2020: Prototype of Winning Design on Display in The Brand Zone

Chicago, Ill. - A concept for an environmentally-friendly, easy-to-use alternative to liquid soap has been named the Grand Prize Winner in the "Package of the Future" competition, a key component of Project 2020: The Consumer Experience, sponsored by DuPont. A prototype of the winning design, submitted by Bailey Brand Consulting (Plymouth Meeting, PA) is currently on display in The Brand Zone at PACK EXPO International 2010 (October 31-November 3; McCormick Place, Chicago, Ill.). Nine other creative concepts are included in the display, which provides insight into the type of packaging consumers might see on retail shelves in 10 years.

Dissolving SoapStix (patent pending) overcome many of the challenges associated with liquid soap refills. Gone are the heavy, bulky containers, spillage and excess waste. Instead, solid gel cylinders are simply added to water in any soap dispenser consumers choose to use, with little to no mess. The package's molded clamshell is made from recycled fibers, printed with soy inks and is recyclable. Transportation carbon footprint and man-power is reduced thanks to the nestability of empty clamshells during the trip from manufacturer to fulfillment and the ability to fit 32 times more clamshells than corresponding bottles with pumps on a standard tractor trailer.

"Project 2020's 'Package of the Future' competition provided a great opportunity for our team to think forward and develop a brand proposition that creates an emotional connection with the consumer of the future," commented Chris Bailey, President and CEO of Bailey Brand Consulting. "An important presumption that grounded our thinking early on was that in 2020, sustainability will not be considered a competitive benefit, rather it will be a consumer expectation. The SoapStix brand experience is intended to offer nothing but positives for all of the stakeholders of the future! A special thanks goes out to our industrial design partner, Robrady Design, for constructing the prototype and helping our vision become a reality."

As the Grand Prize Winner, Bailey Brand Consulting will receive the Complete Studio Bundle from software partner EskoArtwork. The other nine finalists will receive copies of Studio Designer, EskoArtwork's 3D visualization plug-in for Adobe Illustrator.

"EskoArtwork is very pleased to be associated with Project 2020: The Consumer Experience to explore packaging for the future," said Simon James, VP Marketing at EskoArtwork. "Packaging design and collaboration has become 'the' focus of many brand owners as they consider their future marketing plans and EskoArtwork has focused on providing tools to enable this effort with great response. This initiative provides a great platform for brand owners to find inspiration and insight into the future of packaging design."

Judges for the competition included representatives from PMMI; John Lyons and Ron Romanik from media partner Package Design magazine; Yasmin Siddiqi, Global Packaging Director, DuPont; Marianne Klimchuk, Associate Chairperson, Packaging Design Department, Fashion Institute of Technology; and ABI, PMMI's marketing public relations partner.

"Consumer desires are a strong catalyst for packaging innovation," said Charles D. Yuska, president and CEO of PMMI, the sponsor and producer of PACK EXPO. "We created Project 2020: The Consumer Experience to explore if current desires and demands would still be relevant 10 years into the future, and if so, how packaging might evolve to address them. Bailey's winning design takes convenience and sustainability, two current consumer drivers that continue to gain importance, to the next level."
