Prestigious Award for Siemens Energy

New Gas Turbine Wins Innovation Prize for Climate and Environment

German Environment Minister Norbert Röttgen presented Siemens Energy with the innovation Prize for Climate and Environment in the category green products. The prize was awarded by the Federal German Ministry for Environmental Protection, Nature Conservation and Reactor Safety (BMU) and the Federation of German Industries (BDI). It is awarded in recognition of products, which make a decisive contribution toward limiting global climate change and conserving the natural environment. "Our innovative gas turbine in combination with an innovative steam cycle impressively demonstrates that climate protection and power generation are not mutually exclusive and that innovations are particularly valuable in the field of fossil-based power generation," said Michael Suess, CEO of the Fossil Power Generation Division of Siemens Energy. The carbon dioxide emissions from each new power plant equipped with this turbine will be 700,000 tons below the average emissions level for power generation worldwide.

The new superlative turbine built by Siemens impresses by virtue of its dimensions alone. Measuring over 13 meters long and five meters high, and weighing 444 tons, this turbine already has an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records. Its performance data are even more impressive than its external dimensions. When installed in a combined cycle power plant with an electrical capacity of around 570 MW the turbine is capable of supplying power to the entire population of a city with approximately 3.4 million inhabitants - that is equivalent to the size of Berlin. A power plant of this type attains an efficiency level of more than 60 percent. That is a world record that benefits both the environment and climate.

The gas turbine was designed and developed at the Siemens manufacturing and development centers in Berlin, Mülheim an der Ruhr and the U.S. The company invested approximately EUR500 million in development and construction of the gas turbine plant deployed in Irsching, Bavaria, and in subsequent trial operation at the power plant.

The Siemens Energy Sector is the world's leading supplier of a complete spectrum of products, services and solutions for the generation, transmission and distribution of power and for the extraction, conversion and transport of oil and gas. In fiscal 2009 (ended September 30), the Energy Sector had revenues of approximately EUR25.8 billion and received new orders totaling approximately EUR30 billion and posted a profit of EUR3.3 billion. On September 30, 2009, the Energy Sector had a work force of more than 85,100. Further information is available at: http://www.siemens.com/energy.
