Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne Wins California Award for Conservation

CANOGA PARK, Calif., Feb. 4, 2009 - Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne received the 2008 Flex Your Power Award for water conservation in California for saving an estimated 8 million gallons of water annually - equivalent to the amount of drinking water used each day by 25,000 families of five. Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne, a United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX) company, also was recognized for dramatically reducing electricity use and carbon emissions.

Since 2007, Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne has aggressively implemented projects to conserve water and save energy. Projects included waterless urinals, upgraded cooling towers with water softeners, and weather-based landscaping controls, which helped the company save approximately 841,300 kilowatt hours of electricity and reduce carbon emissions by an estimated 3.2 million pounds annually.

"Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne is committed to helping fight global warming and save our natural resources in California and on other locations," said Jim Maser, president, Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne. "Water conservation, reduced electrical use and lower carbon emissions are just a few ways we are working to make a difference, and we're proud to be doing our part. We saved roughly 400,000 gallons of water in irrigation alone in 2008. That's enough to fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool two-thirds of the way full."

The Flex Your Power campaign is a partnership between California's utilities, residents, businesses, institutions, government agencies and non-profit organization that work together to save energy.
