Pratt & Whitney F117 Engine Time On Wing Increases 185 Percent Over the Last 10 Years

LE BOURGET, France, June 15 -- PARIS AIR SHOW -- Pratt & Whitney's F117 engines, exclusive power for the C-17 Globemaster III, have increased time on wing by more than 185 percent over the last 10 years under Pratt & Whitney's fleet maintenance program. Pratt & Whitney is a United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX) company.

"Pratt & Whitney is leading the industry with innovative Performance Based Logistics (PBL) fielding a comprehensive maintenance program for our F117 military customers," said Bill Gostic, vice president, Pratt & Whitney Military Programs and Customer Support.

The C-17 has a mission-capable rate of 85 percent and the aircraft are regularly subjected to harsh operating conditions as a result of their ability to handle short-field, tactical missions, making maintenance even more critical to the health of the fleet.

"A significant contributor to the C-17's high mission-capability rate is the outstanding reliability of its engines," Gostic said. "With fleet operations remaining high, Pratt & Whitney remains laser focused on continuing the level of quality and support our customers expect."

The on wing time of the Pratt & Whitney F117 engines has also increased as a result of the Pratt & Whitney EcoPower® Engine Wash Service, which allows the aircraft to operate in a more efficient and environmentally responsible manner.

Pratt & Whitney's patented EcoPower® washes reduce engine fuel burn by as much as 1.2 percent, eliminate three pounds of carbon dioxide emissions for every pound of fuel saved, and decrease engine exhaust gas temperature, improving performance and increasing the amount of time an engine can stay on wing. The patented collection system also purifies the waste wash water for reuse.

Pratt & Whitney is a world leader in the design, manufacture and service of aircraft engines, space propulsion systems and industrial gas turbines. United Technologies, based in Hartford, Conn., is a diversified company providing high technology products and services to the global aerospace and building industries.
