Pratt & Whitney Debuts First New CFM56-3 Life-Limited Engine Parts

MRO US, ATLANTA, April 18-- Pratt & Whitney, a United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX) company, debuted the first new Pratt & Whitney Global Material Solutions(GMS)-manufactured CFM56-3 life-limited engine parts at Aviation Week's MRO US conference in Atlanta today. The parts on display include a high pressure compressor (HPC) 1-2 spool, an HPC 4-9 spool and HPC front hub.

Pratt & Whitney Global Material Solutions offers customers 48 CFM56-3 engine parts, including 19 life-limited rotating parts. The 48 GMS parts constitute approximately 90 percent of the new material value in an average engine overhaul.

"With our 82-year history as a successful original equipment manufacturer (OEM), Pratt & Whitney is uniquely qualified to deliver a new choice in CFM56-3 engine parts," said Matthew Bromberg, vice president and general manager, Global Material Solutions. "Pratt & Whitney-manufactured CFM56-3 engine parts are being developed using the same rigorous design, verification, test and production certification processes as a new engine program."

"We recently concluded our first engine endurance test with GMS CFM56-3 gas-path engine parts and we will complete additional engine tests and rig tests this year as a part of our FAA certification of CFM56-3 life-limited engine parts," continued Bromberg.

P&W is testing all parts in its two validation CFM56-3 engines to ensure they meet the same design and testing standards required in an OEM certification program. To date, the two engines have logged more than 300 hours and nearly 1600 cycles. All Pratt & Whitney-engineered CFM56-3 engine parts are expected to be certified and enter the market in the first quarter 2008.

Global Material Solutions, an industry-revolutionizing initiative delivering OEM-quality life-limited and gas-path parts for the CFM56-3 engine at a competitive price, was announced in February 2006.

Pratt & Whitney is a world leader in the design, manufacture and service of aircraft engines, space propulsion systems and industrial gas turbines.
