People on the Move spotlights trailblazers in standardization, highlighting their latest achievements, advancements, and contributions to the standards community.
The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE), an accredited standards developer and organizational member of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) recently announced a number of promotions and revised responsibilities for members of its organizational team. These changes are part of a wider SCTE effort to meet the growing needs of its members, cable system operators, programmers, and vendors, and to expand the organization's outreach and program activities.
Tom Russell has been named senior director of standards, with an increased role in the creation of new standards activity in the United States and internationally. A technology professional for nearly 30 years, he was named director of standards at SCTE in 2003 and currently oversees the standards development process for the Digital Video, HFC Management, and Emergency Alert Systems subcommittees. He also represents SCTE to the International Telecommunication Union's Study Group 9. Mr. Russell holds an M.S. in electrical engineering from Capitol College and a B.S. in computer science from Syracuse University.
Derek DiGiacomo has been named senior director, information systems and energy management programs, with responsibility for SCTE's Smart Energy Management Initiative (SEMI). He rose from IT coordinator to information systems director during his first 11 years with SCTE, assuming responsibility for the SEMI program in 2010. In his current role, Mr. DiGiacomo organizes the initiative's semi-annual meetings, analyzes and reports on industry trends, and works with government energy committees and industry standards bodies. He holds an M.S. in telecommunications and network management from Syracuse University and a bachelor's degree from the University of Massachusetts Boston.
Steve Harris has been named senior director, advanced network technologies, with increased business development and content creation responsibility for the SCTE Professional Development (SCTE Pd) program. In 2010 he joined SCTE as director, advanced network management. Previously with Comcast University, Mr. Harris has 10 years of higher education teaching experience and two decades of multiplatform network systems experience. He was also a continuing education professor and network administrator for Camden County College in New Jersey, where he developed high-level training programs for Comcast, Lockheed Martin, and Boeing. From 1995 to 1998 he was a Novell network administrator with Rowan University.
SCTE is a non-profit professional association providing technical leadership for the telecommunications industry. SCTE serves its 14,000 members through professional development, standards, and certification, and offers programs and services for the industry's educational benefit. SCTE's Smart Energy Management Initiative (SEMI) is an effort to help cable operators leverage financial and environmental advantages of implementing green strategies.
