Patrick J. Mullarkey Named President of United Spiral Pipe

PITTSBURG, Calif., Nov. 29, 2010 - United Spiral Pipe LLC (USP), a spiral welded tubular products manufacturing joint venture between United States Steel Corporation (NYSE: X), POSCO and SeAH Steel Corporation, announced today that Patrick J. Mullarkey has been named president. The change was effective Nov. 15.

"Pat's strong leadership skills coupled with his extensive operations background, including his experience with U. S. Steel's spiral welded pipe operation in the Slovak Republic, make him an ideal fit to oversee this important joint venture operation," said David H. Lohr, senior vice president-strategic planning, business services & administration for U. S. Steel.

Mullarkey, 52, began his career in the steel industry with Inland Steel in East Chicago, Ind., in 1981 and moved through a series of supervisory and management positions in the company's iron and steel making operations. In 1994, he joined Raytheon Engineers & Constructors as the lead engineer for the blast furnace reline division and held that position until joining U. S. Steel in 2000.

Mullarkey's first assignment with U. S. Steel was area manager-operating and maintenance, South blast furnaces at Gary Works in Gary, Ind. After advancing through a series of increasingly responsible managerial positions, he was assigned to Gary Works' #14 Blast Furnace construction project in 2005. When the project was completed, Mullarkey transferred to U. S. Steel's Pittsburgh headquarters to serve as director-engineering project development. He was named vice president-technology at U. S. Steel Kosice (USSK) in the Slovak Republic in 2007 and assumed his most recent position as vice president-operations for USSK in March 2009 with responsibility for overseeing day-to-day operations of those facilities.

A native of Chicago, Mullarkey graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1981 with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. He earned a master's degree in business administration from Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Ind., in 2004. Mullarkey, his wife, Carol, and their daughter will relocate to the Pittsburg area.

Located in Pittsburg, Calif., United Spiral Pipe (USP) is capable of producing 300,000 net tons of high-quality spiral welded line pipe per year to meet the needs of North America's natural gas and oil transmission projects. The facility manufactures pipe with outside diameters ranging from 24 inches to 64 inches using world-class pipe making and coating capabilities, including an advanced, automated two-step welding process that gives USP a competitive advantage.

U. S. Steel and Korean steelmaker POSCO each own 35 percent of the joint venture. They have been partners in USS-POSCO Industries (UPI), a steel finishing joint venture in Pittsburg, for more than 20 years. SeAH Steel Corporation (SeAH), a manufacturer of tubular products in the Republic of Korea, owns the remaining 30 percent of the joint venture and brings broad expertise in manufacturing spiral welded pipe to the company.
