Parmatech Receives 2012 MPIF Grand Prize Award in the Medical/Dental Category

WARWICK, RI - ATW Companies, a leading provider of custom manufactured metal components and services, announces that its Parmatech Corporation subsidiary was a winner of the 2012 Powder Metallurgy Design Excellence Awards Competition, sponsored by the Metal Powder Industries Federation (MPIF). Parmatech earned the grand prize in the medical/dental category for a mechanical introducer device used in minimally invasive obstetrical/gynecological surgery. Using the metal injection molding (MIM) process provided a 70 percent cost savings over equivalent machined parts.

ATW Companies president and CEO Peter Frost accepted the award at the PowderMet 2012 International Conference on Powder Metallurgy and Particulate Materials, held in Nashville, TN on June 10-13, 2012.

Made for STD Med, Inc., of Stoughton, Massachusetts, the mechanical introducer device contains five 17-4 PH stainless steel metal injection molded (MIM) parts: right and left cover, curved needle, curved needle linkage, and center linkage. The covers have a complex three dimensional geometry incorporating assembly pins and slots for moving the internal parts that require smooth action for suturing.

Formed to a net shape requiring no machining, the parts are assembled by the customer who performs laser welding on the cover seam/joint. The parts are made to a density of 7.65 g/cm3.

According to MPIF, Parmatech's winning part exemplifies powder metallurgy's special engineering benefits - net shape, precision, innovative fabrication methods, production efficiency, sustainability contributions, and manufacturing cost reduction. Ten Grand Prizes and ten Awards of Distinction in the application-based competition were handed out during the special luncheon in Nashville.

"We are honored that MPIF has again recognized Parmatech as a leader in MIM technology," said Brian McBride, general manager at Parmatech. "We are pleased to be able to showcase how we use MIM to produce complex shapes that can reduce costs compared to a machined part, with high production rates, while producing far less material waste."
