OPTEK Donates 200 High Brightness LEDs to University Bridge Development Contest

CARROLLTON, TX (September 21, 2009) - Providing engineering students with a flexible, high brightness LED solution that ultimately helped them win a design competition, TT electronics OPTEK Technology donated 200 high brightness LEDs to an engineering team at North Carolina State University participating in the 2009 North Carolina Engineering Day. OPTEK's OVQ12S30x7 flexible LED light strips were utilized in the design for illumination of a pedestrian bridge at the Legislative Complex in Raleigh, NC.

"Our concept included a Plexiglass panel with sandblasted designs, and OPTEK's LEDs were placed in the frame of each panel to provide just the right amount of light to illuminate the bridge without excessive light pollution to the surrounding areas," said Matt Poisel, civil engineering student at North Carolina State University. "We won the competition and were able to build our proposed bridge. Without OPTEK's donation, this project would not have been the success that it was."

"With their low power consumption and operating lifespan longer than that of fluorescent and incandescent light sources, the LED light strips provided an ideal energy saving lighting solution for the bridge design," said Alan Bennett, vice president of worldwide sales for OPTEK Technology. "We were happy to donate LEDs to the NCSU engineering team and assist in the unique, green-friendly bridge design project."

In addition to bridge lighting, the flexible LED light strips are also ideal for commercial and residential illumination, under-counter lighting, media illumination, large area backlighting, small to medium channel letters, point of sale displays, and neon replacement lighting.

Available with red, yellow, green, blue, white and warm white LEDs, the flexible LED light strips feature a 120° viewing angle and are available with 30 LEDs per unit and 300 LEDs per reel. Strips up to 16 feet (5 meters) can be operated with a single 12V power supply. Power dissipation is 2.7W for the red and yellow LEDs and 2.3W for the green, blue, white and warm white LEDs. Typical luminous flux is 32, 32, 50, 20, 68 and 60 lm for the red, yellow, green, blue, white and warm white LEDs, respectively. Operating temperature ranges from -40°C to +80°C.

Typical pricing for OVQ12S30x7 flexible LED light strips is approximately $9.00 per strip. Lead time, if stock is not available, is from 4 to 6 weeks.
