ON Semiconductor Introduces a GreenPoint(TM) Reference Design for Notebook Power Adapters

The new 90 watt power adapter solution delivers 90 percent efficiency and design simplicity

Applied Power Electronics Conference (APEC) - Dallas, TX - March 20, 2006 - ON Semiconductor (Nasdaq: ONNN), a leading global supplier of power management solutions, today unveiled a GreenPoint(TM) reference design for 90 watt (W) notebook computer power adapters. Employing a single-stage approach, this reference design eliminates the burden of implementing two power processing stages. Providing true energy efficiency, it addresses all functional blocks of the power adapter while achieving low standby power and compliance with CEC, Energy Star and European Code of Conduct (COC) requirements.

"This reference design extends our leadership position of advanced power management semiconductors for efficient notebook power adapters", said Andy Williams, vice president of ON Semiconductor's Power Conversion Products Division. "ON Semiconductor's expertise in high-efficiency power design was used to develop this fully-tested notebook adapter solution that can be easily implemented by OEMs intent on delivering energy efficient end products to the market."

The Reference Design
The new GreenPoint(TM) adapter reference design delivers 90 percent energy efficiency. Utilizing a proprietary single-stage topology, the design requires far fewer components than traditional two-stage approaches. The reference design meets original equipment manufacturers' (OEM) skin temperature requirements and leakage current requirements of less than 100 micro-amperes (μA).

To reduce output ripple and maintain harmonic currents within the class D requirements as specified by IEC1000-3-2, the reference design utilizes a dual loop ripple/power-factor optimization technique developed by Energy Recovery Systems Corporation - a technology and product development company partnering with ON Semiconductor on the innovative adapter reference design.

The enabling device for the reference design is the NCP1651, an active power factor correction controller designed for operation over the universal input range (85 Vac- 265 Vac) in 50/60 Hz power systems. It provides a low cost, low component count solution for isolated AC-DC converters with mid-high output voltage requirements and eases the task of meeting the IEC1000-3-2 harmonic requirements for converters in the range of 50 W - 250 W. The NCP1651 uses a proprietary multiplier design, enabling significantly more accurate operation versus conventional analog multipliers. The device is offered in an SOIC-16 package and priced at $1.82 per unit in 2,500 unit quantities.

A documentation package for the adapter reference design is available - including description, block diagram, specifications, and evaluation results. These materials are available at www.onsemi.com, as are the product specifications and other supporting information.

Energy Recovery Systems
ON Semiconductor and Energy Recovery Systems Corporation (ERS) established a formal, cooperative relationship that will continue to enable the delivery of cost effective high-efficiency power supply solutions to the market. ON Semiconductor chose ERS as a partner for power system designs and some joint development activities, in the area of adapters and computing power, based on ERS' power supply design expertise. ERS chose ON Semiconductor as a strategic partner, for silicon solutions, based on ON Semiconductor's leadership in developing superior power management integrated circuits.

"By taking a proprietary design approach, we were able to overcome the short comings of single stage topology, and directly address the specific requirements for notebook power adapters," said Abdul Sher-Jan, president of Energy Recovery Systems. "Together with ON Semiconductor, we worked closely with key customers and focused on the critical performance parameters. The result has been the successful development of a low cost single-stage solution that delivers the required performance, with lower design complexity as compared to more complex and more common two-stage approaches."
