Original Press Release:

New Editions of Specifications Published for the Family of CIP Networks

Nuremberg, Germany- November 27, 2007

ODVA announced today it has published new editions of the specifications for the family of CIP Networks, which includes updates for EtherNet/IP(TM), DeviceNet(TM), CompoNet(TM), and ControlNet(TM). These new editions represent the second publication update of these specifications in 2007, and they bring a range of enhancements to the specifications aimed at delivering increased ease of configuration for users.

All together, the new editions include 23 Specification Enhancements. Among the enhancements, the following are especially noteworthy:

Update of The EtherNet/IP Specification with the latest in physical layer international standards provides new specifications for industrially hardened cables and provides active interface design requirements for industrial interfaces, while still supporting commercial products and interfaces. In line with international standards, a minimum of Category 5e cabling components is now recommended. In addition, the specifications for the physical layer have been made more comprehensive through the addition of support for physical media dependents (PMDs), such as TP-PMD and fiber PMD.

New device profile for an Enhanced Mass Flow Controller provides the instances and attributes necessary for the next generation Mass Flow Controller devices, including supporting both upstream process gas Temperature and upstream process gas Pressure in separate instances of the S-Analog Sensor Object, while allowing for future expansion of the profile.

New media for CompoNet includes a 4-conductor round cable for use in IP67 environments, simplifying CompoNet network power supply wiring by allowing communication signal lines and network power lines to be routed through one cable connected via a M8 or M12 connector.

CIP(TM) is a single, media-independent protocol common to all of the family of CIP Networks, and it provides the interoperability and interchangeability essential to open networks and open systems. The current editions of the updated specifications are as follows:

The EtherNet/IP Specification (Vol. 1, Edition 3.3; Vol. 2, Edition 1.4)
The DeviceNet Specification (Vol. 1, Edition 3.3; Vol. 3, Edition 1.5)
The CompoNet Specification (Vol. 1, Edition 3.3; Vol. 6, Edition 1.2)
The ControlNet Specification (Vol. 1, Edition 3.3; Vol. 4, Edition 1.1)

The next publication of updated editions for the above specifications is planned for the second quarter of 2008.

About ODVA
ODVA, founded in 1995, is an international association comprised of members from the world's leading automation companies. Collectively, ODVA and its members support network technologies based on the Common Industrial Protocol (CIP(TM)). These currently include the network adaptations of CIP-EtherNet/IP(TM), DeviceNet(TM) and CompoNet(TM)-and major application extensions to CIP-CIP Safety(TM), CIP Motion(TM) and CIP Sync(TM). ODVA manages the development of these open technologies, and assists manufacturers and users of CIP Networks through tools, training and marketing activities. In addition, ODVA offers conformance testing to help ensure that products built to its specifications operate in multi-vendor systems. ODVA also is active in other standards development organizations and industry consortia to drive the growth of open communication standards. For more information, visit its web site at www.odva.org.
