Dr. Nicholas J. Carino Honored with ASTM International Katharine and Bryant Mather Award
W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., August 13, 2009-Nicholas J. Carino, Ph.D., a concrete technology consultant based in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, has been honored with the 2009 Katharine and Bryant Mather Award from ASTM International Committee C09 on Concrete and Concrete Aggregates.
The Mather Award recognizes its recipients for outstanding contributions in performing administrative and managerial duties in an exceptional manner that enhances the status of concrete technology as a discipline.
A member of ASTM International for more than 30 years, Carino is an honorary member and former chair of Committee C09. He is currently a member at large of the C09 executive subcommittee and works on several subcommittees. He has been honored with multiple awards for his work on ASTM International standards, including the ASTM Award of Merit in 2002 and the Frank E. Richart Award in 2006, as well as the Robert J. Painter Award, a joint award from ASTM International and the Standards Engineering Society, in 2004.
An expert in the field of concrete technology and nondestructive testing, Carino spent most of his career as a research structural engineer at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). In 2004, he retired from NIST after 25 years of service and began his consultancy work.
A fellow of the American Concrete Institute, Carino is also a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the International Concrete Repair Institute. He holds a B.S. in civil engineering, and an M.S. and a Ph.D. in structural engineering, all from Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y.
