NESCC Announces Call for New Private-Sector Co-Chair

The Nuclear Energy Standards Coordination Collaborative (NESCC), a joint initiative of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), has announced that its Steering Committee is currently seeking a qualified individual to serve as the collaborative’s private-sector co-chair.

Under the sponsorship of the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the NESCC was established in 2009 in order to facilitate and coordinate the timely identification, development, and revision of standards for the design, operation, development, licensing, and deployment of nuclear power plants, among other related work. The NESCC is a highly inclusive, collaborative forum and is open to all stakeholders, government legislative and regulatory bodies, industry, standards developing organizations, certification organizations, and other interested parties.

For the position of private-sector co-chair, the NESCC Steering Committee is seeking applicants who hold senior leadership positions in the U.S. commercial nuclear industry. Applicants are expected to have participated in major industry bodies, such as ANSI, the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) or the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), and to have previous experience with standards.

The private-sector co-chair will be expected to work closely with the collaborative’s federal co-chair and to carry out his or her duties in a neutral, consensus-building manner. The chosen individual will attend Steering Committee meetings, convene and facilitate NESCC meetings, develop meeting agendas, and review draft NESCC meeting reports and publications in conjunction with the NESCC Steering Committee; travel expenses for the co-chair will be reimbursed. Other duties include initiating the creation of written publications regarding the NESCC’s activities, identifying potential members and NESCC task group chairs, and, when necessary, serving as a public spokesperson for the NESCC and its activities.

All interested applicants and stakeholder organizations seeking to nominate qualified individuals must submit all required material by Wednesday, June 24, 2013, to Sally Seitz, ANSI senior manager for standards facilitation, at sseitz@ansi.org. All applications will be evaluated by the Steering Committee and applicants may be asked to take part in a telephone interview with the committee. A private-sector co-chair will be chosen from the applicants by Monday, July 8, and NESCC members will be informed of the choice by Friday, July 12.
