NEMA Revises Premier Standard on Magnet Wire, ANSI/NEMA MW 1000-2016

New Release Benefits Magnet Wire Producers and End Users

ROSSLYN, Va.—MW 1000 is the premier standards publication for general requirements, product specifications, and test procedures for the manufacture and packaging of magnet wire. The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) has revised ANSI/NEMA MW 1000-2016 Magnet Wire. This standard presents all existing NEMA standards for magnet wire, including standards for round, rectangular, and square-film insulated and fibrous-covered copper and aluminum magnet wire.

According to Jim Avery, Technical Committee Chair of the Magnet Wire Section Technical Committee, and Technical Support Manager, MWS Wire Industries said, “this new release of MW 1000 benefits both magnet wire producers and end users.”

Revisions to MW 1000 include new specifications that define the requirements for Class 120 polyvinyl acetal film insulated wire constructions. Also, a larger range of wire sizes can now be tested for dielectric breakdown using the cylinder method, which is a more convenient way of testing than making twisted pair test specimens.

“NEMA appreciates the input of magnet wire customers, material suppliers, test equipment manufacturers, and third party test laboratories given during the development of the new edition,” said Avery.

Produced by the NEMA Magnet Wire Section, MW 1000 is employed by a wide range of industries, such as energy transmission, automotive, appliances, medical, aerospace, and electronics.

ANSI/NEMA MW 1000-2016 is available in hard copy or as an electronic download for $153 on the NEMA website.

The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) represents nearly 400 electrical, medical imaging, and radiation therapy manufacturers at the forefront of electrical safety, reliability, resilience, efficiency, and energy security.
