New NEMA Standard Outlines Security Needs for Smart Transportation

ROSSLYN, Va., May 23, 2018—The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) published NEMA TS 8-2018 Cyber and Physical Security for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), which is designed to allow agencies and other transportation infrastructure owners to implement security of the surface transportation electronic systems.

“Connected computer systems have long represented a target for actors with malicious intent, but the perpetrators have changed and the stakes are now much higher,” said Russ Brookshire, Product Manager, Parsons, and chair of the NEMA Transportation Management Systems Cybersecurity Technical Committee. “The number and frequency of cyber-based attacks targeting critical infrastructure—including the transportation systems sector—has grown substantially in recent years.”

NEMA TS 8 encourages implementation of cyber and physical security in transportation systems—legacy, new, and those with revisions planned for the future. NEMA TS 8 security requirements strike a reasonable balance between the current threat environment and the real-world imperative that transportation systems continue to perform critical infrastructure functions.

NEMA TS 8-2018 is available in hard copy and as an electronic download for $56 on the NEMA website.
