Moving Thousands of Light Bulbs Without Breaking a Single One

Victor, New York, February 25, 2012 - Bulb Direct faced a daunting challenge: How to move its inventory of more than 100,000 specialized light bulbs to its new facility - in the dead of winter. Rather than remove each package from shelves and move it separately, entire shelving units were shrink-wrapped and moved intact. Not one bulb was broken in the process.

After 16 years in its former location, Bulb Direct and Companion Radio decided to move to a larger facility just a few miles away, which was customized for their needs. Tom Taylor, Shipping and Purchasing Manager, came up with an innovative idea to use inflated plastic pillows commonly used in packing materials to cushion the extra space above each box of bulbs. "We did a trial run to see if it would work," says Tom. "Then we stuffed about 700 pillows above each shelf of bulbs, which took just four hours. Finally, we shrink-wrapped each shelving unit and moved the whole unit intact." The entire inventory was moved in just two days with no breakage - and without the countless hours that would have been required to re-stack all the shelves.

Bulb Direct and Companion Radio had been sharing two contiguous offices prior to the move. "This move gives us 50% more space, between warehouse and office areas," notes Deb Smith, Vice President. The two companies now share office equipment and services in addition to office space.
