Motorola Issues the Call to Unify Mobile Java Platform

LIBERTYVILLE, Ill., May 15 // -- Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) announced today a new initiative aimed at encouraging greater unification of Java(R) technology for the mobile industry. The company will open source its Java test framework and sample test cases and will develop the reference implementation and compliance tests for Motorola-lead JSRs such as the Mobile Information Device Profiles (MIDP) 3.0 specification. The goal of this effort is to create a more common, open environment for mobile Java platforms through an open source project.
The initial test framework and sample test cases can be found at opensource.motorola.com/ (also announced today) and are freely available to operators, developers and manufacturers. MIDP3 will be available shortly. By making available Java test frameworks and test cases via an open source channel, Motorola encourages the development of a broader mobile and software Java ecosystem, capable of delivering applications with truly "write once, run everywhere" implementation capabilities.
Recognizing the mobile industry's momentum behind Java, Motorola's code contributions will deliver new opportunities for Java developers through increased compatibility and transparency across the Motorola portfolio. This will result in lowered overall development costs, reduced time-to-market and a larger market opportunity with increased Java application interoperability.
