MIPS Technologies Joins The SPIRIT Consortium

Industry Alliance Develops Standards for Integration of Semiconductor IP and Tools

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., June 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- MIPS Technologies (NASDAQ:MIPS) announced today that it has joined The SPIRIT Consortium, a global organization focused on establishing multi-faceted IP/tool integration standards that drive sustainable growth in electronic design. Involving industry leaders in the IP supply chain, The SPIRIT Consortium includes major EDA tool vendors, IP providers and integrated device manufacturers among its members along with a number of innovative small and medium-sized supply-chain companies.

"For SoC designers who need to integrate IP from multiple sources quickly and efficiently, standards are critical to their success," said Mike Uhler, chief technology officer at MIPS Technologies. "The SPIRIT Consortium develops proven and accepted IP specifications required for an SoC design, and we're delighted to be part of the organization. Employing these standards allows all of us to help our customers simplify their design process, lower costs and deliver superior designs to market in minimum time."

Late last year, MIPS Technologies also became a charter member of the System RDL (Register Description Language) Alliance, a standards organization established and chaired by Denali Software to promote standardized usage of RDL in the development and delivery of select intellectual property (IP) products used in system-on-chip (SoC) designs. Together, the RDL description language and The SPIRIT Consortium environment-neutral exchange formats provide efficient mechanisms for creating SoC design descriptions, and integrating complex design flows.

"In the context of IP design and integration, the SystemRDL Alliance enables the design community with a common unified language for describing control registers," stated Mark Gogolewski, SystemRDL Alliance Chair. "MIPS has played a key role in accelerating the adoption of SystemRDL, and we applaud MIPS for now joining The SPIRIT Consortium. SystemRDL and SPIRIT are very complementary, and MIPS Technologies' leadership in the embedded processor space brings great value to both of these efforts."

"IP and tool-flow integration is a complex issue that affects all stages of SoC design and production, and this fact has galvanized the acknowledged leaders in our industry to action," said Ralph von Vignau, The SPIRIT Consortium chairman. "We welcome MIPS Technologies to our organization and look forward to their participation in helping to implement the specifications that will help accelerate the SoC design process and enable the timely delivery of more flexible and efficient solutions."
