Metcam Manufacturing Day Attracts Broad Community Interest; Sparks Plans for Future High School Visits
(Alpharetta, GA) - Metcam's Manufacturing Day, held October 5, 2012, drew a substantial and engaged crowd of attendees interested in learning more about manufacturing. Attendees included students from nearby Lanier Technical College as well as leaders from Forsyth and Fulton County Schools.
For Manufacturing Day, Metcam scheduled five exhibitors, who gave presentations to and networked with attendees after arrival. From there, participants took 20-minute tours of the Metcam facility led by key production employees, staged in small groups (six or fewer) to ensure the opportunity for personal interaction. The tour ended in the Production Control department, where attendees viewed the Steelcase furniture for which Metcam makes parts and watched a demonstration of the CAD software that generates related part drawings. A raffle was conducted for prizes and a tool kit was awarded to one of the attending Lanier Tech students.
Honored attendees included Valery L. Hall, Ed.D., Assistant to the Superintendent of the Forsyth County Board of Education, and Bonnie Cascio, Career Technical Instruction Advisor with Fulton County's Cambridge High School. Both expressed interest in working with Metcam to plan future student tours.
"The feedback from the community was very positive," said Metcam Environmental Health and Safety Manager Sue Max, MPH, CHMM. "The Lanier Tech students were especially impressed with the equipment in the new robotic manufacturing cell. We look forward to hosting more school groups in the future."
Manufacturing Day is sponsored by the Fabricators & Manufacturers Association, International (FMA), the U.S. Commerce Department's Hollings Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP), the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) and The Manufacturing Institute and will be supported by dozens of other national and regional manufacturing organizations nationwide.
