Original Press Release:
Mazak Manufacturing Technology Scholarship Created for Engineering Students at Cincinnati State
The Mazak Manufacturing Technology Scholarship has been created for engineering students attending Cincinnati State and Technical Community College.
DEARBORN, Mich., —Mazak Corporation, Florence, Ky., believes manufacturers have a vested interest in guiding and funding advanced manufacturing education to ensure adequate levels of skilled and educated labor necessary for keeping U.S. manufacturing strong and growing. As part of its commitment to building tomorrow’s manufacturing workforce, Mazak has provided $24,000 to the SME Education Foundation for the creation of the Mazak Manufacturing Technology Scholarship. The scholarship is for students entering or currently attending Cincinnati State Technical and Community College, Cincinnati, Ohio, and who are pursuing a degree in engineering technology or mechanical engineering technology.
“The Mazak Manufacturing Technology Scholarship supports advanced manufacturing at its core,” says Bart A. Aslin, CEO, SME Education Foundation. “Easing the financial burden of engineering students allows them to concentrate on their studies and ultimately broaden their career prospects by measuring up to the very specific and rapidly changing needs of industry.”
The new scholarship provides funding for two, full tuition scholarships valued at $6,000 each for a two-year cycle (2013-2014) and again for the 2014-2015 cycle. The application requires students hold a minimum 2.0 GPA, provide a transcript, two reference letters, student essay and resume. ACT or SAT scores are not required. The scholarship will be administered by the SME Education Foundation. Students may apply by accessing the SME Education Foundation’s automated online scholarship application.
Mazak Corporation designs and manufacturers CNC turning centers, multitasking lathes, vertical and horizontal machining centers for the aerospace, automotive, electronics and construction industries. In Ohio, there is strong demand for mechanical engineering technology (MET) professionals. The U.S. Department of Labor indicates that overall employment of MET graduates is expected to increase through 2020, especially for those who demonstrate mastery of new software and technology used for product design and manufacturing.
“We are investing in our future workforce,” says Brian Papke, president, Mazak Corporation. “This scholarship is important to the advanced manufacturing engineering candidates we would like to be able to hire.” In addition to the scholarship, Mazak actively engages in other strategies to help solve the skilled labor problem and to encourage young people to consider careers in manufacturing.
“In Kentucky, for instance,” says Papke, “we work extensively with technically based learning institutions such as Northern Kentucky University and the Gateway Community and Technical College in Covington, Kentucky, and its vocational programs. Plus, we maintain our own long-established apprentice program, and we encourage all our fellow U.S. manufacturers to do the same. Skill training and advanced manufacturing education must be national priorities with increased funding for both, or our country’s manufacturing sector will continue to experience a severe shortage of skilled labor, especially as our manufacturing workforce continues to age and move into retirement.”
