NEMA Publishes Updated Edition of Magnet Wire Standard

Revisions include updated specifications, test procedures, and requirements

Rosslyn, Va., August 12, 2019 —The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) published ANSI/NEMA MW 1000-2018 Magnet Wire, which is the premier Standard for general requirements, product specifications, and test procedures for the manufacture and packaging of magnet wire. It presents in concise and convenient form all existing NEMA specifications for magnet wire, including round, rectangular, and square film insulated and/or fibrous covered copper and aluminum magnet wire for use in electrical apparatus.

“The magnet wire industry is pleased to have the new edition of MW 1000 available for use,” says Edgar Duarte, Magnekón, chair of the NEMA Magnet Wire Section Technical Committee. “It is especially important for manufacturers that this Standard represents state-of-the-art magnet wire manufacturing practices and end-use product performance.”

This new edition includes revisions to the dimensional requirements for glass fiber-covered wires, which harmonize with the IEC mathematical progression approach to calculating dimensional increases. ANSI/NEMA MW 1000-2018 also adds new specification sheets for glass fiber-covered, varnish-treated round and rectangular magnet wire. It also includes new test procedures for determining thermoplastic flow and dielectric breakdown at the rated temperature of film insulated rectangular magnet wire.

ANSI/NEMA MW 1000-2018 is available in hard copy and as an electronic download for $278 on the NEMA website.

ANSI/NEMA MW 1000-2018 can also be accessed via www.MW1000.com, which provides steps on how to best use the Standard, a listing of all amendments that have taken place since 2016, changes under consideration for the next edition, a historical database of current and obsolete magnet wire specifications, recorded podcasts on MW 1000-relevant topics, and links to NEMA Member manufacturers of magnet wire and NEMA staff working with the magnet wire industry.

The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) represents nearly 325 electrical equipment and medical imaging manufacturers that make safe, reliable, and efficient products and systems. Our combined industries account for 360,000 American jobs in more than 7,000 facilities covering every state. These industries produce $106 billion in shipments and $36 billion in exports of electrical equipment and medical imaging technologies per year.
