LUXEON® Automotive LEDs Deliver Solid-State Lighting Technology for High-Beam and Low-Beam Headlamps on the Audi R8
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- LUXEON automotive LEDs from Philips Lumileds are enabling revolutionary design possibilities for forward lighting (high beam and low beam), delivering life of vehicle performance and are being implemented on the new Audi R8. LUXEON LEDs provide the light output required to meet automotive regulatory requirements and are capable of producing headlamp systems that exceed the performance of most conventional headlamp bulbs. Philips Lumileds research and technology advances have resulted in LEDs that deliver the flux and luminance required to achieve a legal headlamp beam with a small number of LEDs while meeting stringent colour and reliability requirements. Surface brightness (luminance) improvements by incorporating Thin Film Flip Chip (TFFC®) technology.

Packaging advancements that deliver the ruggedness required in harsh thermal environments.
The linear array of chips in each LUXEON Automotive LED is the result of years of technology development and research into the optimal dimension and packaging for each light source. With these LEDs, headlamp suppliers can engineer and create the optical systems that deliver the required amount of light and a unique appearance to enhance the design of the vehicle in both the lit and unlit state.
