During the pandemic most manufacturers and industrial companies initiated new protocols including temperature readings, social distancing, increased surface cleaning, etc.
The CDC’s December 31, 2020 update on Guidance for Business & Employers says,
- “Consider ventilation system upgrades or improvements and other steps to increase the delivery of clean air and dilute potential contaminants.”
- “Consider using ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) as a supplement to help inactivate SARS-CoV-2, especially if options for increasing room ventilation are limited.
- Upper Room UVGI systems can be used to provide air cleaning within occupied spaces, and in-duct UVGI systems can help enhance air cleaning inside central ventilation systems.”
Lumin-Air, based in Indianapolis, Indiana, is working with manufacturers and industrial service companies to install UV upper-room units in their plants, shop floors, offices and high-traffic areas like break rooms. These devices are easy to install, silent and require virtually no maintenance.
The UV upper-room units are commissioned to provide UV to blanket the space above people’s heads, This installation disinfects the air as it circulates throughout the room, yet doesn’t allow UV to shine on occupants.
Upper air UVGI devices have been successfully used since 1937 to control airborne pathogens, and are recommended throughout the world to fight other respiratory diseases like tuberculosis. In each installation, installers use UVC meters to commission the units, ensuring adequate coverage above people’s heads and no UVC on occupants.
Lumin-Air also evaluates a company’s HVAC system to see if improving its filter efficiency to MERV-13 equivalence is possible. In most cases, a polarized filter can be installed that has the pressure drop of a MERV-4 filter, the efficiency of a MERV-13 filter and the dust holding capacity of a 4” deep pleated filter.
A major challenge for many manufacturers is hiring quality people. Providing a safe workplace is essential to attracting and retaining productive employees.
