HANNOVER, Germany /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Lucent Technologies (NYSE:LU) has completed the first phase of a project to upgrade T-Systems' global Internet Protocol (IP)/Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) network with advanced IP routers. T-Systems, the business customer unit of Deutsche Telekom, chose Lucent to further enhance the capacity and functionality of its global IP/MPLS network in order to provide a comprehensive set of IP-based services to its international enterprise customers.

In the first phase of the project, recently completed, Lucent Worldwide Services deployed Juniper Networks M320 multiservice edge routing platforms in nine countries, and is providing ongoing maintenance services. The project builds on an existing IP equipment maintenance services contract between the two companies.

The Juniper M-series routing platforms consolidate all services from several distinct access networks onto a single IP/MPLS network. This IP/MPLS network serves as the IP-transport infrastructure for T-Systems' IP Virtual Private Network (VPN) services. It provides T-Systems' enterprise customers with IP-based services such as high-speed access to the Internet and corporate intranets and extranets as well as managed and unmanaged IP-VPN (MPLS) services.

"This contract demonstrates our commitment to continue investing into our IP/MPLS network," says Bjorn Claassen, Senior Executive Vice President TC Operations at T-Systems International. "We believe that this will further improve our ability to offer our global enterprise customers the same advanced IP services in all major countries."

"We are happy that we could support T-Systems in their IP/MPLS upgrade," said Hans-Burghardt Ziermann, Managing Director of Lucent Technologies in Germany. "IP services for enterprise customers are a growing market segment. Through T-Systems' network upgrade, international enterprises can now profit from the same IP services in their international offices."

The deployment covered T-Systems International's global IP network in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, U.K., France, Italy, Spain and the U.S.
