LogicaCMG Keeps Flytoget on Track With Wireless Remote Sensor System

LONDON, May 22/PRNewswire/ -- On- Train System Improves Availability and Ensures Safety

LogicaCMG today announces the successful conclusion of the initial pilot implementation of its on-train axle bearing temperature management system for Flytoget, the Norwegian high speed train service. In the pilot all 24 wheels on one train were equipped with a wireless temperature sensor.

The solution is designed around wireless sensors that measure and actively monitor the temperature of the wheelbearings of the train. Mounted on these axles, the sensor units transmit the data to an onboard computer via active RFID technology, and the results are then transmitted to a back office via GPRS. The same modules can also offer GPS positioning to identify the precise location of each train carriage.

Cees de Wijs, director in the international industry, distribution and transport business at LogicaCMG explains what this technology means for
Flytoget: "Delivering maximum safety and ensuring optimal use of assets is vital for rail transport companies who often invest millions in assets such as train carriages. This system plays a key role in enabling preventative maintenance for the carriages, as we collect the information in real time and set a threshold to trigger an alarm in the back office if the axle bearings become too hot. This means safety is assured and assets are fully utilised."

"We have delivered this solution using off the shelf components, avoiding expensive hardware development costs and reducing the time to market as we do not need to continually test each component. Our expertise and track record in the transport sector has proven invaluable in delivering and installing this solution for Flytoget. Combining this innovative information collection technology with our hosted asset management solution will enable Flytoget to improve its availability and revenues whilst making savings through preventative maintenance. The pilot has shown that the solution is very robust and mature, and is ready for a larger scale rollout."

Stefan Christensson from Flytoget AS said: "Continuous improvement of safety and state of the art train technology are crucial for Flytoget. The requested solution for the wheel bearing temperature monitoring project was to add a new safety barrier for bearing failure and enable condition based maintenance. The solution supplied by LogicaCMG has now been in service for a year and is currently undertaking its final approval based on technical robustness, reliability and passed heavy winter conditions."

"The monitoring system does not only increase safety and add a new safety barrier against wheel bearing failures, it also allows for condition based maintenance where traditional revision intervals now can be replaced with on condition changes and the total wheel set life can be optimised. LogicaCMG has combined "off the shelf components" with a new and innovative approach from Flytoget to increase safety and optimise maintenance cost for the trains."

At the Gartner ITxpo in Barcelona from the 22-24th of May 2006, LogicaCMG will demonstrate its delivery of wireless-enabled business transformation in enterprise asset management, tracking and tracing and condition monitoring, remote and smart metering and advanced metering infrastructure under the theme of "Advantage through Innovation".
