Local Executive Accepts Award in International Design Competition

Sam Moorman, Sales Engineer, ASCO Sintering Company, Commerce, California, accepted a Grand Prize Award in the Medical/Dental Category of the 2015 Powder Metallurgy Design Excellence Awards Competition. The award was given for a sinter-hardened steel planetary gear system, featuring a carrier with an integrated sun gear and three planetary gears. The system is used in a single-use, portable, physician-operated surgical device. The part is an outstanding example of a PM medical application, unique in that it is not made of stainless steel nor fabricated through MIM.

They accepted the award for their companies at the POWDERMET2015 conference in San Diego, Florida

PM is an automated metalworking process that forms metal powders into precision components used in applications such as auto engines and transmissions, hardware, industrial machinery, sporting goods, defense, and firearms. More than 800 million pounds of PM parts are made annually in North America.

The competition is sponsored annually by the Metal Powder Industries Federation, an international trade association for the metal powder producing and consuming industries.
