CHICAGO - Littelfuse, Inc., the global leader in circuit protection, co-sponsored the No. 11 MOUSER ELECTRONICS/GEICO/KV Racing Technology Chevrolet Dallara driven by Indy Racing League champion Tony Kanaan at the GoPro Indy Grand Prix at Sonoma, CA. Unlike oval tracks, the scenic setting in the foothills of Sonoma wine country provides a unique, natural-terrain course that challenged the drivers at every turn with elevation changes, a carousel turn that requires downshifting and a tight right-hand turn leading onto the front stretch. A winner at Sonoma in 2005, Kanaan started in 16th position and finished 10th earning 20 points on the 85-lap course.
With two races remaining, Kanaan is sixth place in the overall standings with 327 points. He is one of eight drivers still mathematically eligible to win the 2012 IZOD IndyCar Series championship. The Sonoma race also represented a milestone for Kanaan: It was his 194th consecutive Indy car start, dating to the 2001 CART race in Portland. Kanaan is second only to Jimmy Vasser, who holds the record with 211 consecutive starts.
Throughout the weekend of the GoPro Indy Grand Prix at Sonoma, Littelfuse participated as part of its co-sponsorship of the No. 11 KV Racing car through its "Speed2Design" contest. "Speed2Design" creates a behind-the-scenes weekend experience for engineers that involved spending time with the team engineers and pit crew behind the Littelfuse co-sponsored race car. Since engineers value and understand the technology-related challenges, demands and reliability requirements involved with these high-speed racing machines, "Speed2Design" provides a unique opportunity for them to explore this advanced engineering technology in a personal, accessible setting.
During several of this year's IndyCar races, Littelfuse is hosting a series of design engineer-focused events. Along with attending the race, "Speed2Design" participants will enjoy pit access, hospitality and exclusive conversations with the team engineers and crew members-all courtesy of Littelfuse.
At the GoPro Indy Grand Prix, the five "Speed2Design" participants included a senior principal semiconductor engineer involved with global defense, a program manager for a medical technology company, as well as electrical engineers from across the country. "Speed2Design" participants stood side-by-side with members of the pit crew throughout the weekend, and during TechTalk conversations learned how Littelfuse circuit protection is embedded in racing electronics. Littelfuse profiled its TMOV, SP1003, LC03 and other products that are used for protection against surge, ESD and lightning events in the crew's high speed broadband communications, in monitors used by the crew and in power supplies and other devices throughout the pit's electronics support infrastructure.
