Linde Welding Expert to Discuss Improved Quality/Economics for BMW at Canadian conference

Mississauga, Canada, September 13, 2010 -- In this very competitive economy, metal fabricators are constantly looking for ways to improve quality and their bottom line. At the Canadian Welding Association Conference (CWA) in Collingwood, Ontario, this month, an expert from Linde will explain how the company was able to demonstrate improved weld quality and economics at a BMW plant in Germany.

Linde Canada is a member of The Linde Group, a world leading gases and engineering company.

The CWA conference is being held at the Blue Mountain Resort in Collingwood, Ontario, September 26-28, 2010, and will focus on welding technology advancements that increase efficiency, productivity and global competitiveness.

Christoph Matz, project engineer in Linde's development center in Unterschleissheim, Germany, will be sharing results of a recently completed demonstration using oxygen-doped argon-helium gas mixtures in MIG welding of BMW aluminum automotive structures. "Aluminum is constantly becoming more and more important in many areas of the manufacturing industries, particularly in transportation where reduced weight and comfort are critical," said Matz, who has an MS in mechanical engineering and holds the title of International Welding Engineer.

Welding aluminium has its peculiarities such as high thermal conductivity and high thermal expansion and that can lead to welding flaws. Linde engineers performed a large-scale demonstration in the aluminium welding shop of BMW's plant in Dingolfing, Germany, using the oxygen-doped argon-helium welding gas mixture. The result was improved weld quality and a significant reduction in costly rework.

Linde specialists also developed an economic and reliable supply system for BMW that supplies the complex gas mixture through an existing argon pipeline, using standardized products rather than specialty mixtures.

"Linde offers more than gas molecule," said Matz. "The BMW project is just one example of how we provide solutions for customers. Linde has many welding experts who can work on specific welding challenges to help our customers improve their welding economics and competitive advantage at the same time."
