Lignum Vitae North America Receives NSF/ANSI 61 Certification

Company meets standards for third party certification of regulatory compliance

Powhatan, Va  – Lignum Vitae today announced that its water and self-lubricated bearings have achieved NSF/ANSI 61: Drinking Water System Components – Health Effects certification from NSF International (NSF). NSF/ANSI 61 certification verifies that products are safe for use in drinking water, and comply with U.S. and Canada regulatory requirements for many components used in water systems.

“Bearings made from Lignum Vitae wood offer reduced environmental impact because they contain no lead or toxic metals, and require no oil or grease when in use,” said Bob Shortridge, president of Lignum Vitae North America. “NSF/ANSI 61 certification is a significant achievement and validates our belief in the public health safety of our products.”

NSF International is an independent organization that develops standards, and tests and certifies products and systems. The NSF/ANSI 61 standard was developed by a team of scientists, industry experts and industry stakeholders. Components certified to the NSF/ANSI 61 standard undergo rigorous testing to ensure regulatory compliance for components that contact drinking water from source to tap. Components are tested to determine what contaminants, if any, may migrate or leach from products into drinking water. Certification also confirms that any contaminants found are below maximum levels to be considered safe. Companies that manufacture, sell or distribute products that come into contact with drinking water in North America are required to comply with the NSF/ ANSI 61 standard.

Lignum Vitae provides water lubricated bearings to hydro plants worldwide. The bearings are made from sustainably-sourced Lignum Vitae wood, which is the heaviest, most dense commercially-available hardwood in the marketplace today. Naturally self-lubricating, Lignum Vitae bearings can last decades without being replaced, saving hydro plant operators millions in operating and maintenance costs and reducing the environmental impact of operations.
