LIA Announces New Fellows

(Orlando, FL, October 10, 2007) - Laser Institute of America (LIA) is proud to announce the addition of four new Fellows who have been elected by their peers for their outstanding contributions to the laser community. The new Fellows of LIA are Lin Li, William P. Roach, Robert Thomas, and John Tyrer. They will be honored by LIA President William Shiner during the 2007 Annual Meeting & Awards Luncheon at the 26th International Congress on Applications of Lasers & Electro-Optics (ICALEO®) on Wednesday, October 31, 2007.

The title of Fellow is the highest level of membership in the LIA. It is awarded to recognize members of the institute who have attained remarkable professional distinction in the LIA mission areas of laser science and technology, laser applications and safety, and provided outstanding service in their field.

Prof. Lin Li, a professor of Laser Engineering from the University of Manchester in England, has undertaken research in the field of laser processing for more than 20 years, and is one of the pioneers for the applications of diode lasers in materials processing. Prof. Li's research work has resulted in 343 publications; including 168 in peer-reviewed journals, 129 in conference proceedings, 39 patents, and 7 books or book chapters.

Dr. William Patrick Roach, a Senior Science Advisor at the United States Air Force Research Laboratory in Texas, has produced several scientifically superior publications on the effects of ultrashort laser pulses on the retina. Dr. Roach's influence has been critical in accomplishing Department of Defense missions for energy weapons development, modeling, and simulation.

Dr. Robert Thomas, a Senior Research Physicist also from the United States Air Force Research Laboratory, has played an important role in advancing experimental and theoretical research in the study of laser-tissue interactions, spectroscopy, and other laser biophysics topics. Dr. Thomas now serves as Secretary of the ANSI Accredited Standards Committee Z136 for Safe Use of Lasers.

Dr. John Tyrer, a Senior LIA Member and professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Loughborough University in England, has built an international reputation in optical measurement with lasers and laser safety. He has chaired many international meetings, and has been a strong supporter of ICALEO® and ILSC®.

Laser Institute of America (LIA) is the international society for laser applications and safety that has served the industrial, educational, medical, research and government communities throughout the world since 1968. LIA is the secretariat and publisher of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Z136 series of laser safety standards. For more information, visit www.laserinstitute.org.
