Leviton Partners with LIPA to Reduce Energy Use and Carbon Footprint at Melville World Headquarters

Smart efficiency measures to reduce energy usage by thousands of kilowatt hours a year; save over $115,000 in annual energy costs

Melville, NY, May 5, 2010 - As part of its corporate sustainability initiatives, Leviton Manufacturing Company, North America's leading producer of electrical and electronic wiring devices and systems, collaborated with Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) to build in long-term sustainability initiatives at its Melville world headquarters facility. Last month, during the 40th Anniversary Celebration of Earth Day, LIPA executives visited Leviton's 5-story, 140,000 square foot high-performance "green building" to present Leviton company executives with a $48,955 rebate check as part of the utility's Commercial Efficiency Program. The program offers businesses discounted energy rates as well as rebates for installing energy-efficient devices and systems. Many of the installed systems at the company's world headquarters complex include its own daylight harvesting, commercial sensors and lighting energy management systems.

"Reducing energy use and carbon footprint within our global operating infrastructure is a mission-critical component of Leviton's corporate mandate," said Leviton Manufacturing President and CEO, Donald J. Hendler. "By partnering with the experts at LIPA's Commercial Efficiency Program, we received the customized technical support we needed to achieve our efficiency goals. As a provider of environmentally- conscious products and systems, we are able to conduct our operations in an eco-friendly office complex that reflects our commitment to serving our customers, while serving as a socially-responsible corporate citizen."

"Long Island is an excellent place to do business, I am pleased LIPA was able to partner with Leviton Manufacturing to make it economically feasible to move their headquarters to Long Island," said LIPA President and CEO Kevin S. Law. "LIPA's Economic Development and Efficiency programs assist businesses on Long Island succeed and grow by providing solutions to meet current and future energy-related needs."

The implementation of energy efficient lighting and building systems will reduce Leviton's electric energy demand by an estimated 141 kilowatt (kW) and its electric energy usage by an estimated 646,433 kilowatt hours (kWh) per year, resulting in savings of approximately $116,000 annually. The efficiency measures will also result in avoided emissions, over a 20-year period, of approximately 23,260 pounds of Sulfur Dioxide, 15,516 pounds of Nitrous Oxide, and 15,095,600 pounds of Carbon Dioxide -- the equivalent of removing 1,360 passenger cars off the road and a saving 842,860 gallons of gas consumed. Leviton's relocation from Little Neck, Queens last June to Melville, Long Island brought 450 jobs to Long Island and produced an energy rate discount through the LIPA program totaling nearly $400,000 over the next five years.
