Judges pick best transportation projects in northeast region.

Judges Select the Best Transportation Projects in the Northeast Region
Groton, Connecticut - Projects that reduced congestion, stimulated economic development, improved multimodal connections, reconnected communities, and made commuting safer were recognized today as winners of America's Transportation Awards at the annual meeting of the Northeast Association of State Transportation Officials.
"The variety of projects featured in this year's northeastern competition is amazing," said Susan Martinovich, AASHTO president and director of the Nevada Department of Transportation. "The America's Transportation Awards each year showcase the tremendous work being done by state departments of transportation. This year's entries are particularly outstanding because of the immediate benefits they bring to the communities they serve and because they demonstrate a high level of creative problem solving."
AASHTO, AAA, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce co-sponsor the annual awards competition to recognize the very best of America's transportation projects in three main categories - On Time; Under Budget; and Innovative Management.
Eight transportation projects from seven northeastern states were nominated.
Three states earned awards in the On Time category: the New Hampshire Department of Transportation's Hampton Open Road Tolling (small project); New York State Department of Transportation's Long Island Expressway Reconstruction (medium project); and the New Jersey Department of Transportation's Route 18 Reconstruction (large project).
Maryland Department of Transportation's Metro Fire and Security Systems Management project earned the Under Budget award.
In the Innovative Management category, three states took home honors: Massachusetts Department of Transportation's Phillipston Bridge Replacement (small project); Pennsylvania Department of Transportation's Pittsburgh West End Improvement (medium project); and Rhode Island Department of Transportation's InterLink Transportation Hub project (large project).
Winners in the three remaining regional competitions will also compete for the national Grand Prize and People's Choice Award, which will be presented at the AASHTO Annual Meeting Oct. 16 in Detroit. The Grand Prize is awarded to the state DOT project receiving the greatest number of points in judging by a panel of experts. The separate People's Choice Award is presented to the transportation project that receives the greatest number of online votes from the general public. Online voting will begin Aug. 31.
