JSG Oceana Wins a Family Business Award

JEANNETTE, PA., May 29, 2018… JSG Oceana is honored to have been recognized as 1 of 17 businesses awarded the Family Business Award by the Pittsburgh Business Times at the annual awards ceremony held at the Westin Convention Center in downtown Pittsburgh on May 1.

Located in a city that was once known for its abundance of glass factories, JSG Oceana is very proud to be the only glass factory left. Purchased out of bankruptcy in 1976 by Ted Sarniak III, JSG Oceana first operated as an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) that sold directly to lighting companies, who then sold these products to the consumer.

In 2004, Ted’s wife, Kathleen Sarniak-Tanzola, left her immensely successful career in the cosmetics industry to work with her husband and then became the COO of the company. She took on numerous different responsibilities in this role, especially in 2010 after her husband, Ted, began working with another company in Florida, where they cared for another home. Quickly, Kathleen learned how to run the business on her own.

When Ted passed away unexpectedly, Kathleen was already running the business, so she was greatly familiar with the different tasks needed for the day-to-day operations of the company. “It’s a true blessing I was running the company for four years. It was much easier for me to do what needed to be done after that,” Kathleen said in an interview by the Pittsburgh Business Times.

Currently, as a mother-son team, Kathleen and her son, Ted Sarniak IV, general manager, run the company. In addition, there are numerous other family members that work at JSG Oceana. “I think of family as all the people who work here, and I think they feel the same,” Kathleen said.
