James H. Turner, Jr. Named Recipient of Ronald H. Brown Standards Leadership Award
Mr. James H. Turner, Jr., Chief Counsel of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Science and Technology, has been selected by the U.S. Celebration of World Standards Day Planning Committee as the 2008 recipient of the prestigious Ronald H. Brown Standards Leadership Award. He will be honored by members of the U.S. standardization community on Thursday evening, October 23, 2008, at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, DC.
Named for the late U.S. Secretary of Commerce, the Ron Brown award recognizes demonstrated leadership in promoting the important role of standardization in eliminating global barriers to trade. It is presented during the U.S. celebration of World Standards Day, an annual event which honors the U.S. standardization and conformity assessment community and recognizes its efforts to promote American competitiveness in a global marketplace, safeguard the environment, and improve the quality of life for workers and consumers around the world. The theme for this year's event, Intelligent and Sustainable Buildings, will spotlight the critical role of standards and conformity assessment programs in ensuring safety requirements; facilitating coordination among contractors, builders, engineers, and architects; and incorporating new technologies in the design and construction of the built environment.
Mr. Turner was nominated by ASTM International and ASME for his bipartisan and professional dedication to the U.S. standards community. For the past quarter century, Turner has raised general awareness of the importance of standards while promoting the value of the voluntary consensus standards system throughout the legislative and regulatory process. From his leading staff role in the enactment of the National Technology Transfer and Advancement Act (NTTAA) to the advice and counsel that he has offered to a broad range of standards and code developing organizations, Turner's insights, experience, and vision have greatly benefited the public by facilitating the development of private sector standards that respond to government and private sector needs.
Celebrated annually each October, World Standards Day pays tribute to the thousands of volunteers around the world who participate in standardization activities and helps to raise awareness of the role that standards play in addressing national and global priorities. Since the initial celebration in 1970, the event is now recognized in nations around the globe. U.S. activities are organized annually by a planning committee consisting of representatives from across the standards and conformity assessment community. The event is co-chaired each year by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). In celebration of its ninetieth anniversary, ANSI will also serve as the 2008 administrating organization.
