ISRI Recognizes U.S. EPA with Design for Recycling® Award

ISRI has awarded its Design for Recycling® award to the U.S. Environmental Agency's Design for the Environment program. ISRI presented the award during its 2007 Convention & Exposition in New Orleans.

The EPA program was chosen because of its overall leadership in creating innovative design partnerships, and its dedication to empower businesses and industry sectors to incorporate environmental considerations, along with performance and cost considerations, into decision-making processes.

"EPA's Design for the Environment and ISRI's Design for Recycling® share the vision that it takes voluntary programs to produce changes in manufacturing processes that consider a product's end-of-life during the design stage," said ISRI Chair Frank Cozzi.

In video-taped remarks, EPA Administrator Steven Johnson expressed gratitude for being honored with the Design for Recycling® Award. "We are proud to partner with ISRI on efforts like the National Vehicle Mercury Switch Recovery Program and developing best management practices for electronics recycling," Johnson said. Jim Gulliford, EPA Assistant Administrator collected the award at the event.

The Design for the Environment (DfE) program is one of EPA's premier partnership programs. It works with individual industry sectors to compare and improve the performance and human health and environmental risks and costs of existing and alternative products, processes, and practices. DfE partnership projects promote integrating cleaner, cheaper, and smarter solutions into everyday business practices.

For more than two decades, ISRI has promoted Design for Recycling®, a voluntary program that encourages manufacturers to fully consider end-of-life recyclability in the earliest stages of product design.

ISRI established the Design for Recycling® award, to honor a program, company or individual whose product or program design has incorporated one or more of the following:

A reduction in the number of different recyclable materials
A reduction or elimination of hazardous constituents
An increased yield of the product's recyclables
An improvement in the safety of recycling
A design that allows for easy disassembly for recycling

This is the second Design for Recycling® award. Last year's recipient was Hewlett-Packard, who was honored because of its documented efforts to reduce the use of hazardous substances, to simplify component design, and to build computers and printing products for easy disassembly and recycling.
