Ipsen Rewards Heat Treatment Knowledge

CHERRY VALLEY, IL - Ipsen USA ran a six-month feature called the Ipsen Challenge, each month posing specific heat treating challenges from their own experts, Jim Grann and Roger Anderson. Anyone could submit an answer for the chance to win. Each month, Ipsen drew a correct submission to win a $100 gas gift card to the company of their choosing; these names were then entered into a final drawing for a Kindle Fire. Ipsen would like to congratulate Arend Hart as the final question winner and the overall Ipsen Challenge winner. Arend Hart works as a metallurgist at Johnson Technology/GE Aviation. The final challenge question read: "When vacuum copper brazing stainless steel components, how can the brazing cycle be modified to minimize vaporizing of the copper filler material?" Hart responded, "Run partial pressure argon of 1 micron or greater up through 2,000°F. Personally, I would run conservatively, trying to maintain 20 microns." "I was on the Ipsen site gathering information on the TITAN® furnace when I noticed the contest," reported Hart, "while we do not process copper-containing alloys in our plant, the vapor pressure diagram I was given years ago came in handy in helping determine a solution." Other Ipsen Challenge winners, and recipients of $100 gas gift cards, include Christopher Fountain, Brant Ramm and Harvey Hornung. Noteably, Harvey Hornung was the contest participant that answered our $200 gas card prize question, which was a particularly stumping question. Congratulations to all contest winners!
