Improved Cost Benefits for Overmolded D-subminiature Cable Assemblies

D-subminiature or "D-sub" is a common connector invented in 1952 and has since been adopted into standard and custom applications. Since inception D-sub connectors have been partnered with costly metal backshells which lack the needed flex relief. At ISC we are able to provide opportunity to overmold D-sub assemblies to improve, and in some cases, reduce the total cost of ownership while providing obvious cosmetic benefits and mechanical advantages.

The predominance of metal backshells which started in the computer industry has helped integrate D-sub connectors by recognizing the advantages and trends toward lower cost, improved interconnect solutions. With D-sub cable assemblies the source of a properly designed and executed assembly is a fully encapsulated contact wire termination point for strain relief and mechanical advantage. The first step is the design of the premold, which is imperative to properly mold a D-sub assembly. The premold is an initial injection of material such as polypropylene over the contacts and exposed conductors which helps integrate structure and ruggedness for the D-sub. After the premold we design a final mold incorporating any cosmetic enhancements along with value added strain relief providing improvement to the overall flex life of the assembly. The most important rule is to design the premold and final mold such that the molded wall thickness uniformity minimize any concerns for mold sinks and cosmetic imperfections, resulting in a quality product.

In conclusion, ISC's improved designs for overmolding D-sub cable assemblies offers significant opportunities for improved strain/flex relief, mechanical advantages and helps reduce the total cost of ownership when compared to traditional metal backshells.
