Overview

The System p5(TM) 570 offers new POWER5+(TM) processor options with 64-bit 1.9 GHz and 2.2 GHz 2-way processor card features, each with 36 MB of L3 cache and eight DDR2 Memory DIMM connectors. The new processors on the p5-570 can be configured into a 2-, 4-, 8-, 12-, or 16- way system. New DDR2 memory features offer CoD memory at 533 MHz as well as a 16 GB 533 MHz classic memory feature that allows up to 256 GB of memory in a single p5-570 system and a 32 GB 400 MHz feature that allows up to 512 GB of memory in a single p5-570 system with POWER5+ 2.2 GHz processors.

The POWER5(TM) processors (#7830, #7832, #7833, #7834) and their related CoD features currently being offered on the p5-570 will be removed from new system sales on May 31, 2006. The DDR1 memory features and related CoD features will also not be available on new system orders after May 31, 2006. After that date, these features can be ordered only as MES.

The p5-570 provides end-to-end Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop (FC-AL) support in conjunction with System Storage(TM) DS4000/6000 and DS8000 line Fibre Channel storage. The combination of System p5 and System Storage provides a complete end-to-end set of solutions designed to maximize your infrastructure investment.

You can add the new POWER5+ processors to existing systems by processing an RPO MES to remove existing processors and then ordering an MES upgrade for the new processors. This will require updating to the latest level firmware code.

Limitations

Processors

A p5-570 system can have from one to four system drawers. Each drawer has two processor slots. A system with one drawer may have one or two processor cards installed. A system with two, three, or four drawers must have two processor cards in each drawer.
When two or more processor cards are installed, all cards must have the same processor frequency.
Each processor card has two processors and eight memory DIMM slots. The DIMM slots are different for DDR1 and DDR2 memory. All processor cards must support the same memory technology, either DDR1 or DDR2.
Systems configured with 1.5 GHz processors have a maximum of eight processors and two drawers.
All processor cards require one Processor Power Regulator. A second Processor Power Regulator provides redundant power support. Three power regulators in one drawer provides a redundant power regulator at the drawer level.
Processor feature numbers 7832 and 7833 require the use of redundant Processor Power Regulator feature numbers 7875 or 7768. One processor card requires the use of two regulator feature numbers 7875 or 7768 per drawer. Two processor cards require the use of three regulator feature numbers 7875 or 7768 per drawer.
Processor feature number 8338 requires the use of redundant Processor Power Regulator feature number 7768. One processor card requires the use of two regulator feature numbers 7768 per drawer. Two processor cards require the use of three regulator feature numbers 7768 per drawer.

Memory

The 9117-570 must contain a minimum of 2 GB of system memory. Memory is expandable up to a maximum of 512 GB with DDR1 DIMMs, or a maximum of 256 GB or 512 GB (processor dependent) with DDR2 DIMMs.
Memory is installed in groups of four DIMMs mounted on the processor cards. Each processor card has eight DIMM slots.
DDR1 memory is supported on 1.5 GHz processor cards (#7834), 1.65 GHz processor cards (#7830), and 1.9 GHz processor cards (#7832). DDR2 memory is supported on 1.9 GHz processor cards (#7833), 1.9 GHz processor cards (#7782), and 2.2 GHz processor card (#8338). All DIMMs in a p5-570 system must use the same memory technology, either DDR1 or DDR2.
Memory feature number 4498 (32 GB DDR2) can only be used with processor feature number 8338 (2.2 GHz). Feature number 4498 cannot be mixed with other memory features on the same processor card. The presence of memory feature number 4498 in a CEC Drawer will reduce the frequency of all memory in the system to 400 MHz.
Each processor card must have at least 2 GB of memory installed.
Each processor card must have at least four memory DIMMS installed.
It is recommended that each processor card have an equal amount of memory installed. Balancing memory across the installed processor cards allows memory accesses in a coordinated parallel manner.
Memory feature numbers 4492, 4494, and 7049 can be mixed on the same processor card. No other memory features can be installed on the same processor card with feature numbers 4492, 4494, and 7049.
The presence of memory feature numbers 4492, 4494, or 7049 in a CEC drawer will reduce the frequency of all memory in the system to 200 MHz.
Plans for future memory upgrades should be taken into account to help obtain optimal performance without limiting future memory expansion.

IBM Electronic Services

IBM Global Services has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to put you on the road to higher systems availability. IBM Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that provides you with an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support on the IBM eServer. You should benefit from greater system availability due to faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. IBM Electronic Services is comprised of two separate, but complementary, elements: IBM Electronic Services news page and IBM Electronic Service Agent(TM).

IBM Electronic Services news page provides you with a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used by customers to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The IBM Electronic Service Agent is a no-additional-charge software that resides on your IBM eServer system. It is designed to proactively monitor events and transmit system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, customer-defined timetable. The IBM Electronic Service Agent tracks system inventory, hardware error logs, and performance information. If the server is under a current IBM maintenance service agreement or within the IBM warranty period, the Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to provide proactive service that maintains higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent will be made available to IBM service support representatives when they are helping answer your questions or diagnosing problems.
