Hydraulic Institute Updates Air-Operated Pumps Standard and Air-Operated Pumps Test Standard

Press release date: Feb 01, 2011

Parsippany, NJ, - The Hydraulic Institute (HI) has updated the 2004 edition of the ANSI/HI standard on air-operated pumps and published Air-Operated Pumps ANSI/HI 10.1-10.5-2010. The updated standard is for air-operated pumps and includes positive displacement reciprocating pumps used for general liquid transfer. These pumps are usually driven by means of a compressed gas (usually air) from an outside source.

The pump may be designed with a single diaphragm or double diaphragms connected to a reciprocating connecting rod in which one side of the diaphragm is in contact with the liquid being pumped and the other side is in contact with the compressed gas. The new, 24-page standard includes the following sections:
o Types, configurations, and nomenclature
o Definitions
o Design and Application
o Installation, Operation, and Maintenance

According to HI Technical Director, Gregg Romanyshyn, "This standard is an excellent resource for anyone unfamiliar with the operating principles of air-operated diaphragm and bellows pumps. The reader will quickly understand how air-operated diaphragm pumps are able to handle many kinds of liquids, including abrasive slurries, viscous liquids, and liquids containing high solids content. Air-operated bellows pumps are designed to handle some of the harshest chemicals by using materials appropriate for the service."

The updated, 18-page standard is available in hardcopy or downloadable PDF format. The cost is $85.00. HI members enjoy a 25% discount. Contact Publications@pumps.org for further information or assistance in ordering.

The Hydraulic Institute has also updated the 2004 edition of the ANSI/HI standard on air-operated pump tests and published Air Operated Pump Tests ANSI/HI 10.6-2010. This new standard applies to the test of air-operated pumps.

The standard provides uniform procedures for mechanical and other pump performance testing and for recording of the test results of air-operated diaphragm and bellows pumps. All tests are also based on using water at ambient temperature. The new version of the standard covers the following types of areas:
o Test to demonstrate mechanical integrity when pump is in operation
o Performance test
o Noise measurement
o Hydrostatic testing of pressure-retaining components
o Net Positive Suction Head test

Gregg Romanyshyn explains that, "This is the most informative, useful test standard for air-operated diaphragm and bellows pumps and an essential reference for users of these pumps", adding that, "general guidelines for pump test setup are provided to ensure accurate and consistent test results".

The following topics are also included in the updated standard:
o Terminology
o Symbols
o Definitions
o Test Procedures
o Test setup and equipment
o Methods of measurement
o Calculations and plotting pump performance

The Air-Operated Pump Tests ANSI/HI 10.6-2010 standard is available in hardcopy or downloadable PDF format. The cost is $75.00. HI Members enjoy a 25% discount. Contact Publications@pumps.org for further information or assistance in ordering.

Gary Cornell of Blacoh Fluid Controls, Inc. and Gregory Duncan, Wilden Pump & Engineering, a part of the Dover Pump Solutions Group, led the committee that developed these standards. Committee members also included representatives from ARO/Ingersoll Rand, Price Pump Company, and Warren Rupp, Inc.

HI Pump Standards are reliable, widely accepted references for anyone involved in pumps, including users, consultants, contractors, construction firms, manufacturers of pumps, seals, motors, instrumentation, controls, and pump software developers and systems integrators.
