HARRISBURG, Pa - Nov. 11, 2008 - For over 50 years, the HTS connector family has met the most rigorous environmental and technical requirements. Traditionally used in industrial and railway applications due to their excellent electrical and mechanical features, these robust products have migrated to other demanding applications such as traffic management, white goods, wind energy, solar and lighting.

This heavy duty connector system is a highly modular system of inserts and shells that allow designers to configure an interconnection to meet specific application needs. The wide range of selections allows EMI shielding, various levels of sealing, different latching mechanisms and cable entries - in essence, the ability to construct a connector custom-tailored to the application.

Recently Tyco Electronics has significantly expanded the HTS connector product portfolio with several new product families.

High Variable System is Very Flexible

One of the key new products is the HVS modular system. This high variable system offers a choice of more than 25 different connector modules that can be quickly and easily mounted to or dismounted from a metal frame without tooling. Up to six single modules or three double modules can be used within a single shell.

Interface modules include high-voltage contacts (up to 3000 V nominal), high-current contacts (up to 250 A) and high-density signal contacts (up to 25 contacts in a single module). Coaxial contacts, RJ-45 modular plugs, USB and IEEE1394 (FireWire) contacts are offered within the HVS system. Other available modules support Quadrax contacts for operation to 1 GHz, subminiature-D interfaces and also pneumatic connections.

The populated HVS connector systems can be used in a broad range of heavy duty connector enclosures.

Plastic Connectors Expand Range
The availability of plastic HTS connectors is another recent development. Traditionally, only metal housings were available in this family. A growing range of HG-Q series plastic connectors has been developed for industrial machinery, motor drives and other industrial applications. These highly reliable and cost-effective connectors are offered in standard and EMV shielded versions.

HG-Q.4/2, HG-Q.8 and HG-Q.10 series connectors are designed for operation from -40ºC to +125ºC. They conform with Desina and ISO 23570-3.4 standards and meet IP65 protection class specifications in their locked positions. A variety of accessories are available for use with these robust connectors.

HG-Q.10 motor connector housings are specifically designed for direct mounting on motors. HG-Q.4/2 and HG-Q.8 connectors are available with straight and right-angled hoods and cable-to-cable coupler housings.

Combination Inserts

Another recent addition is the HMX hybrid insert. These inserts combine power and signal interface within one insert. Space-saving HMX inserts require 30 percent less space than traditional inserts. They permit reductions in cost and component count, as they require no frames. HMX inserts are designed for use with the broad array of HTS hoods and housings and find application in many instances where both signal and power connections are required.

Increased Production Capacity

To support the product line expansion and entry into new markets, manufacturing capacity for HTS connectors within Tyco Electronics has been increased significantly. Capacity at the ISO14000 and IRIS (International Railroad Industry Standard) certified plant has been increased four-fold permitting the target lead time for production to be significantly reduced.

Tyco Electronics has also expanded its engineering and advanced development manufacturing teams to better support the HTS connector product line. Additionally, those teams, along with associated product management personnel, have moved into a new facility for increased efficiency.
