Henkel Adhesives and Sealants for Fuel Cell Assembly

MEA-Compatible Adhesive Technologies for Micro-to-Large Fuel Cells

Rocky Hill, Conn. - July 17, 2008.... Henkel Corporation
(http://www.henkelna.com) has introduced a full line of adhesives and sealants for use on micro-to-large, stationary or portable fuel cells. Henkel products are compatible with membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) and include structural adhesives for metal and plastic bonding, threadlockers, thread sealants, seam sealants and general purpose adhesives.

Henkel fuel cell adhesives and sealants offer high resistance to acids, coolants and chemicals, and are formulated to deliver a gas-tight seal on components and stacks. MEA adhesives and sealants are used to bond bipolar plates, seal MEAs, and seal between bipolar plates and end plates.

Three silicone or hydrocarbon-based formulations are currently available for formed-in-place, cured-in-place and liquid injection molding applications.

Loctite® threadlockers prevent threaded fasteners from loosening in service due to ongoing exposure to vibration. Filling the spaces between threaded metal parts and hardening to prevent leakage, Loctite® thread sealants seal and secure plugs, pipes and fittings on stam generators, water supply connections, control valves and air supply connections.

Applied to protect the interior of the fuel cell from moisture penetration and air leakage, seam sealants skin over quickly to prevent dirt pickup. For metal bonding, structural acrylic and epoxy adhesives resist tensile, shear and impact stresses and reduce the number of spot welds required in the fuel cell assembly. These adhesives are used on the cabinet assembly and to attach metal components. For plastic-to-plastic bonding, Loctite® cyanoacrylates and acrylics provide high strength bonding on plastic connections, covers and sensor assemblies.
