Hamlet Sets Trends in Quality Control at NAB2007

NAB launches include file-based analysis, an even smaller handheld device, and new rackmount audio tools

Amersham, UK, 15 March 2007: Hamlet, the leading international specialist in affordable precision test and measurement equipment, is showing how quality control can be maintained in the analogue, digital and now the file-based world in its display at NAB2007. With all-digital instruments that need no routine realignment and software-only tools, Hamlet technology minimises the lifetime cost of ownership as well as guaranteeing precision and repeatability.

VidScope-vx is a new concept in quality control systems, implementing all the common tools in a single software platform running on a standard PC. The screen layout is user-defined, with up to six simultaneous windows possible including surround sound, audio level and phase, video waveform, vectors, colour gamut, confidence monitor and others. Even including the cost of the computer and capture card, this still offers multiple functions for the cost of a single-function dedicated device from other manufacturers.

Based on the same precision software algorithms, ReelCheck is aimed at the growing reliance on file-based transfers. ReelCheck performs a complete quality control template check on incoming files automatically in the background, reporting a pass to the automation system and releasing it for broadcast, or storing an error list with timecodes for subsequent checking and remedial work. Like VidScope-vx, ReelCheck can investigate most common file types in SD or HD - including 4:4:4 dual-link - compressed or uncompressed, as well as live feeds.

For the mobile engineer who needs accurate, flexible HD, SD and analogue tools to hand at all times, the Hamlet FlexiScope is already established as a favourite with engineers worldwide. Joining it at NAB this year is MicroFlex, providing the same performance and flexibility in an even more compact package. Both share the same modular architecture with plug-in modules for analogue and digital measurements. MicroFlex incorporates an integral high resolution screen for waveform and vector displays with precision cursors and video and audio confidence monitoring. IP control allows remote operation and error data download from any location.

Seen for the first time at NAB are three new digital audio rackmount monitors. The Hamlet Precision range is designed to give logical and intuitive monitoring in SD and HD audio installations. The A2-E8SHD monitors 8 channel audio from both discrete sources or using its internal Dolby E/Dolby Digital decoder. The A2-4SHD monitors four channels from SDI, HD-SDI, AES or analogue inputs, and the A1-2SHD provides two channel monitoring from SDI. Each Precision monitor provides both accurate metering and quality audio reproduction at high sound levels.

Many production, post production and engineering installations still need dedicated test instruments, and Hamlet will display its complete range including the latest versions of its MonitorScope and DigiScope 9000 series, covering HD, SD and analogue measurements including embedded and AES/EBU audio. Both use Hamlet's On-Screen Display, allowing the display to be routed to any convenient monitor, and the MonitorScope also includes a built-in 6.5" (165mm diagonal) high resolution LCD panel.

Hamlet's new location at NAB: stand N419 in the north hall. The NAB exhibition runs April 16 - 19 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
