GZA GeoEnvironmental Funds Paper on Mesothelioma in Drywall Finishing Workers

Waukeesha WI and Norwood, MA, Issued February 17, 2011... GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc., one of the nation's leading environmental and geotechnical consulting firms, recently funded a paper on Mesothelioma in Drywall Finishing Workers.

Dr. Kim Anderson, Senior Principal/Director of Toxicology, Environmental Health, Michael J. McCoy and Matthew E. Wolton of GZA's Environmental Health Division co-authored the research manuscript. The manuscript was published by the Journal of ASTM International and is available online at their website at www.astm.org. Dr. Anderson and Mr. McCoy have served as expert witnesses for both plaintiffs and/or defendants in toxic tort litigation involving asbestos, organics, intoxicants, metals and microbial agents.

The manuscript evaluates the context in which workers were exposed to drywall joint compound based on the state-of-the-art of the construction industry during the post World War II era through the 1970s and conducts a review of the scientific literature association with the drywall trade and occupational exposure to airborne asbestos from drywall finishing work practices. Specifically, this manuscript reviews the available epidemiologic literature and the apparent lack of association between drywall finishing work and the development of mesothelioma in drywall workers.

ASTM International, formerly known as the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), is a globally recognized leader in the development and delivery of international voluntary consensus standards. Today, some 12,000 ASTM standards are used around the world to improve product quality, enhance safety, facilitate market access and trade, and build consumer confidence.

"We congratulate Kim, Michael and Matthew on the completion of this important work," said William R. Beloff, President and CEO of GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc. "As experts in the field of Environmental Health they put a great deal of time into this study and we are pleased that they have made a significant contribution to their industry"
