Gilbane Building Company Celebrates New PK-8 Dedication and Ribbon Cutting in Urbana

The event marks the second school opening this year for Urbana City Schools

URBANA, OHIO (PRWEB) OCTOBER 08, 2018 - District officials and Gilbane Building Company hosted the community event on Sunday, October 7 for the dedication and official ribbon cutting of the new Urbana PK-8 school. The new facility is the second building to be completed this year, following the opening of the new high school in April. The modern, state-of-the-art buildings support the District’s efforts to encourage academic development and growth through collaboration.

Spanning over 180,000 SF, the new PK-8 school includes two gymnasiums, a cafeteria, two playgrounds, a softball field and a multi-purpose athletic field. Learning studios replace the traditional concept of classrooms creating learning communities within each grade. These studios have modular features such as garage doors and partitions that offer the ability to flexibly configure rooms for collaborative learning.

“This project has been smooth from start to finish and the most successful of my career,” said Matt Niemeyer, Gilbane Building Company Project Manager. He added, “Having the right team made all the difference. From the project architect, Fanning Howey, to the OFCC and Urbana City Schools and the contractors on site, our cohesive approach kept the project rolling despite an aggressive schedule. We are honored to provide a new home for the students of Urbana City Schools for years to come.”

Gilbane served as construction manager at-risk for the $67.3 million project, which included the elementary/middle school to house the PK-8 student population with a projected enrollment of 1,527 students. The project also included the new 87,000 SF high school that houses approximately 480 students in grades 9-12. Both buildings were designed to achieve LEED Silver Certification.
