FTC to Host Workshop on Green Building and Textile Claims
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has announced Eco in the Market, an open workshop on the development of green building and textile claims, consumer perception of such claims, and substantiation issues. All interested parties are invited to register for the workshop, which will be held on July 15, 2008.
The third workshop of its kind, Eco in the Market is part of the FTC's regulatory review of the Guides for the Use of Environmental Marketing Claims (Green Guides). With general principles that apply to all marketing claims, the Green Guides describe the basic elements necessary to substantiate environmental marketing claims to avoid unfair or deceptive marketing material. The workshop will cover the effectiveness of the Green Guides, and may include discussion of possible revisions to improve the Guides' value.
The one-day event will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the FTC's Satellite Building Conference Center. It is open to the public, and there is no fee for attendance; however, all attendees will be asked to show photo identification. Pre-registration is encouraged but not necessary. Those who pre-register may receive email updates with additional information prior to the workshop. The FTC plans to make the workshop available via webcast on their website for those who cannot attend.

Prior to the workshop, the FTC is inviting all comments on issues regarding green building and textile claims. Comments to inform discussion at the workshop should be submitted by July 1, and comments in response to the Federal Register Notice announcement of the workshop are due by August 1. All comments should be labeled "Green Building and Textiles Workshop--Comment, Project No. P084203." To file comments electronically, click here.
