Frost and Sullivan Honors NUBURU with Technology Innovation Award for Developing Superior Quality for The Welding Market

NUBURU's blue laser technology provides unparalleled capability to fill needs in battery manufacturing, e-mobility, and additive manufacturing.

December 3, 2019, Centennial, CO - The prestigious business analysis firm Frost & Sullivan has selected NUBURU to receive their distinguished 2019 Technology Innovation Award. NUBURU's blue laser design delivers unmatched brightness at the wavelength most suited to producing high quality material processing of copper, aluminum, and other industrially critical materials. The company's AO-150®, AO-500®, and BlueWeld® laser optic head provide, respectively, 150 Watts, 500 Watts, and 1000 Watts to a workpiece. That's sufficient to weld copper up to 1.2 mm thick, and beyond.

Frost & Sullivan noted the physical advantage of blue wavelengths over the incumbent infrared laser welding technologies. Copper absorbs well over 10 times more power from blue light than it does from infrared. Welding copper with infrared radiation is something like tipping up the ketchup bottle to get the flow started: it takes a lot of energy to get going, but once started, you usually end up with far more than you actually need. With infrared welding, the "too much" manifests itself in small explosions within the melt pool, leading to the violent expulsion of material and leaving holes in the finished joints. Those two defects, called "spatter" and "voids," are essentially eliminated with blue laser welding.

The weld quality, combined with the high power and high brightness unique to the NUBURU design, opens up untapped markets to the benefits of laser welding. The Frost & Sullivan award cites several target markets poised for significant growth. Electrical vehicles, for example, will contain about 15 times as much copper as internal combustion engines - and in many cases the blue laser can produce more compact, higher quality joints than any alternative technology. As put in the award description, "NUBURU's blue laser technology stands out as a widely beneficial welding technology for the automotive market."

The Frost & Sullivan discussion of NUBURU's laser system also mentions the benefits of blue laser processing for battery fabrication, consumer electronics, and the nascent field of 3D metal manufacturing, perhaps more commonly known as additive manufacturing.

Frost and Sullivan recognized the conjunction between the unequalled capabilities of NUBURU's high power lasers and the market growth in sectors that demand more efficient methods of processing copper and other metals. For those reasons, Frost & Sullivan recognized NUBURU with their 2019 Technology Innovation Award for "a game-changing blue light laser technology."

Frost & Sullivan's Best Practices Awards are presented each year to companies that are predicted to encourage significant growth in their industries, have identified emerging trends before they became a marketplace standard, and have created advanced technologies that will catalyze and transform industries in the near future.

Frost & Sullivan's Best Practices Awards recognize companies for demonstrating outstanding achievement and superior performance in areas such as leadership, technological innovation, customer service, and strategic product development. Industry analysts compare market participants and measure performance through in-depth interviews, analysis, and extensive secondary research in order to identify best practices.
