Foster Transformer Company Receives 2015 MANNY Award for New Product Development/Innovation

Cincinnati, OH - Foster Transformer Company was recently presented a 2015 MANNY Award from Cincy Magazine, for New Product Development/Innovation. Chosen from a field of hundreds of entries, the award-winning product is a series of ultra-high efficiency isolation transformers for use in applications where power must be isolated from the utility grid to reduce the likelihood of electrical shock or a spark triggering an explosion or fire. These transformers are ideal for a variety of commercial and industrial applications including control panels and power feeds for equipment located in NFPA 70 Class I, II, and III Hazardous Locations such as mining, oil and gas exploration, grain handling and chemical processing facilities, and marine applications where their ultra-high efficiency and low temperature rise make them suitable for installation in explosion proof or sealed enclosures and their reduced leakage current limits shock and spark hazard. Foster is projecting this product will generate a half a million dollars in new sales this year, growing to $2 million over the next few years.

These transformers are the result of a two year development project seeking to optimize performance while minimizing size. Foster improved safety and reliability by reducing leakage current to ground by more than half compared with Fosters previous generation and limiting temperature rise to extend life. The final product is also up to 25% lighter than previous generations while offering full load operating efficiencies of 97% to 99%. These increased efficiencies allow the transformer to operate in closed or sealed environments with no external cooling required, making them ideal for applications where contamination is a concern, such as chemical, food or pharmaceutical process industries. Available in ratings from 1 to 25 kVA, primary voltages of 120-600 Volts and output voltages of 120-277 Volts.

We approached it from the standpoint that transformers have to be extremely efficient, more than any of the current standard calls for, says Herm Harrison, Vice President. With reduced size, decreased audible noise, less heat, and greater efficiency, Fosters high efficiency isolation transformers are the ideal choice for a broad range of industrial and commercial applications.

Foster Transformer has been making electronic transformers, power supplies, and electromagnetic components for over 75 years. Their corporate headquarters, Engineering Lab and primary manufacturing facility are located in Cincinnati, OH with additional manufacturing capacity available in China. The ability to manufacture their own tooling, fixtures and unique production machinery allows Foster to provide quick turnaround and start-up.
